Mayhem Construction recently completed an architectural new home project in collaboration with Design Builders Manawatu, set on a picturesque 1-hectare section near Palmerston North. This 400m² bespoke design serves as a luxurious family home, featuring modern amenities and ample space for family enjoyment.
This stunning home boasts four spacious bedrooms, with the master bedroom featuring a large walk-in robe and an ensuite. Two living areas offer versatile spaces, with the main living area showcasing a high vaulted ceiling, luxurious well appointed kitchen, full height raking windows showcasing extensive views and an elegant wood fire. The second living space also shares the raking ceiling and window features while maintaining a more intimate setting warmed by a gas fire.
Bringing indoor / outdoor flow, is a large alfresco area, seamlessly connected to the main living space. This area, warmed by an impressive open outdoor fire encased in stone cladding, serves as a perfect spot for family gatherings and relaxation.
Mayhem Construction was the lead on-site, responsible for all building works and managing sub-trades to ensure smooth progress. The seamless communication between Mayhem Construction, Design Builders Manawatu, and the clients was crucial. "I have a great relationship with Gareth, owner of Design Builders Manawatu," explains Mason. "Having previously completed my apprenticeship with Gareth, this was a fantastic opportunity to work together again and bring the clients' dream home to life."
The project presented unique challenges, particularly with the integration of steel portals and beams required to support the rafter-style roof framing, alfresco area and other large spanning areas. "The main kitchen and living area have a cathedral-style feel, achieved by installing 8 large steel portals and 3 steel beams throughout the home," Mason details. The intricate process of aligning these components with the timber framing, showcased the team's expertise.
The alfresco area, with its low-pitched roof and four skylights, adds an intimate feel, perfect for social gatherings. The home also features extensive decking along the northern side, creating seamless indoor-outdoor flow with four large stacker doors.
Attention to detail is a cornerstone of Mayhem Construction's brand. Mason emphasizes, "Craftsmanship for builders is not only found in the visible details but also in the meticulous effort that goes into the main structure." The team used a combination of traditional building techniques and modern practices to ensure everything remained straight and true over the large spaces, and paid close attention to the alignment of finishings as it came together.
One notable client request was the direct consultation on the layout of wardrobes and shelving, particularly in the master wardrobe. This involved custom shelving, drawer, and hanging storage built on-site by Mayhem Construction.
Throughout the project, the clients were regularly involved, with frequent site visits and discussions about each stage of the build. "The clients were fantastic to work with, and we always make time to walk around and discuss the current stages with them," Mason reflects. "They frequently brought the team sausage rolls for smoko on Fridays, which we greatly appreciated."
The result is a beautiful new home with ecstatic clients. The home stands as a testament to Mayhem Construction's commitment to quality and precision.
